In an interview a year ago, Franklin said she had plans to "retire" after the release of her new album.

Franklin said she was "exuberant" about her new album and "can't wait to get in the studio". Most recently, doctor's orders prevented her from performing at the New Orleans Jazz Fest in March.

The musician was forced to cancel two live shows in March on doctor's orders, making her last live performance at the Elton John AIDS Foundation in NY last November. She's my favourite singer; I am a big Aretha Franklin fan.

The Respect icon has struggled with weight issues throughout her life, and has battled alcoholism.

Aretha Franklin was "gravely ill" as of Sunday night, according to a new report.

Yahoo Entertainment has contacted Franklin's representatives for comment.

Showbiz 411 reported that Franklin was "o$3 riginally diagnosed with cancer in 2010".

In 2017, the Respect hitmaker was forced to deny a cruel death hoax after a tweet claiming she had died went viral. "I was sitting there reading the newspaper and it was saying someone in my family said that".

"Aretha is surrounded by family and people close to her", he wrote in his column. She will be so missed as a mother, sister, friend, cousin.

Over the course of her five-decade career, Aretha has earned 18 Grammy awards and sold over 75 million records.

Franklin was the first ever woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and topped Rolling Stone's Greatest Artists of All Time List.

She revealed she planned to keep recording but confirmed it would be her past year in concert.
