Zimbabwe’s opposition candidate challenges election result, inauguration halted

The presidential inauguration of Zimbabwe's Emmerson Mnangagwa has been delayed after the opposition launched a court challenge to his election victory.

Mr Mnangagwa won 50.8% of the vote compared with Mr Chamisa's 44.3%. "For now it has been stayed pending determination of the court challenge", Ziyambi said.

MDC Alliance lawyers say they want the election results overturned, they say the inauguration must not happen and they say some of the evidence they have are vital poll papers, V11 forms, that show an attempt to tamper with figures.

The court will have 14 days to make a ruling on the case.

"Mr Biti is in good condition and we will follow the case closely".

The opposition MDC lodged a legal challenge to last weeks election, alleging widespread irregularities.

Mr Chamisa wants the court to declare him the victor or call a fresh election, it is reported. On Wednesday, General Sibusiso Moyo (Foreign Affairs) sent a circular to diplomatic missions stationed in Zimbabwe inviting their officers to attend Mnangagwa's in inauguration at the national sports stadium.

Former minister of education David Coltart added his voice to confirm the filing of the court papers to challenge the presidential results and some constituencies.

"In the alternative, we seek that there be another election which complies with the dictates of the law", Mpofu said.

Also on Friday, lawyers for senior opposition figure Tendai Biti asked judges to throw out charges against him over the protests against alleged election fraud, in a case raising further global concern about the new government.

Diplomats and election observers were present at the hearing in Harare after Biti fled to Zambia but was handed back to Zimbabwean police despite claiming asylum.

The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission, established under the 2013 constitution, on Friday released a damning report into the post-election crackdown.

"On the basis of the evidence we have placed before the court, we seek in the main relief to the effect that the court should declare the proper victor and the proper victor is my client", Mpofu told reporters outside.
