Wayanad district has been completely cut off by landslides and the state government has sought the army's help to restore the road network to the hill district.

The weather department forecast heavy rains until August 15, India's Independence Day, also warning of flooding in low-lying coastal areas.

A third red alert was issued for the Idukki reservoir.

A team sent by the Central government is also visiting flood-affected areas in Kerala. Chief Minister accompanied by Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala, Minister for Revenue E Chandrashekharan, Chief Secretary Tom Jose, Additional Chief Secretary for Revenue P H Kurien and Police Chief Loknath Behera left Thiruvananthapuram at 7.45 am.

Shibu, a relief official told UCANEWS on Friday that almost 200 army soldiers joined rescue workers in the worst-hit Ayannkulu, Idukki and Wayanad areas.

Kochi: Fifty-five people have so far been evacuated from flood hit areas in Kerala by the navy in its "Operation Madad" to assist the state government, following heavy rains and release of excess water from many dams. Following which the District Collector has imposed a ban on heavy goods vehicles in Idukki till situation get better in the state. At least 50 tourists, including 24 foreigners, stranded at the Plum Judy resort at Munnar since Wednesday, have been rescued, said state Tourism minister Kadakampally Surendran said.


The United States consulate in Chennai issued a travel alert and advised the USA citizens to avoid visiting areas affected by landslides and flash flood.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had described the flood situation in the state as "very grim" and it was for the first time in the history of the state that 24 dams had been opened at a time following the water level reaching maximum capacity. Authorities have opened all five shutters of the Cheruthoni dam of the Idukki reservoir on Friday morning. He urged people to be vigilant since this will lead to a rise in the water levels of Periyar river and its tributaries.

On Twitter, the chief minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, stated that National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) had been deployed in Alappuzha, Kozhikode and Ernakulam districts.

Additionally, the shutters of over 20 dams, including Idukki's Cheruthoni dam, had to be lifted which has resulted in many areas getting further submerged. This will raise the water level in Periyar river and its subsidiaries.

Meanwhile, people living at Kariveli Mannapuram in Aluva in Ernakulam district said mud and slush filled their homes due to waterlogging and well water has turned muddy. "MHA is closely monitoring the flood situation", Singh tweeted.
