Trump insists Trump Tower meeting 'totally legal'

But the President, who has insisted there was no collusion, tweeted last night: "Fake News reporting, a complete fabrication, that I am concerned about the meeting my wonderful son, Donald, had in Trump Tower".

On Trump's tweet about Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting at Trump Tower: It undercuts the latest official story his team has put out.

And Trump once again defended the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting, in which his son met with a Kremlin-connected lawyer saying it was "totally legal", and that he had not known about it. As David R. Lurie of Slate noted, Trump's actions in lying about the meeting and instructing his top lawyer to also lie would appear to constitute obstruction of justice, which current Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh argued during Bill Clinton's scandal could lead to impeachment.

TAMARA KEITH, BYLINE: Hey, Ailsa. Trump's disclosure came in response to a story that he was increasingly concerned about the possibility of Russian Federation probe by the FBI Special Counsel Robert Mueller zeroing on his son who was part of a meeting that was purportedly claimed to be about adoption.

Days later, he tweeted: "Most politicians would have gone to a meeting like the one Don Jr. attended in order to get info on an opponent".

"If it was me, as the president's son, I'd be calling my dad and said, 'Dad, don't do me many any more favors, '" said Quigley.

The younger Trump said "I love it" when offered the "dirt" on Mrs Clinton.

It was not clear where Mr Trump's theories are from but the idea of tree-clearing for fire prevention may have come from interior secretary Ryan Zinke, who advocated the idea in September. So then the president was at a press conference with the French president. And this is what he said. "I don't think so". The veracity of which is challenged by campaign finance law that states it is illegal for a foreign national to "directly or indirectly, make a contribution or a donation of money or other thing of value". "Trump thinks he's saying too much", said a Republican close to the White House. They would have called the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Why would he want to bring this up? "Every country on earth wants to take wealth out of the USA, always to our detriment".

KEITH: Now, we can't be a hundred percent certain about what motivates any one given tweet.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating USA intelligence findings that Russians conspired to sway the election in Mr Trump's favour.

Donald Trump has not directly referenced the Trump Tower meeting since his tweets this weekend. Well, well, would you look at that: the patented "how dare this Fox moron accuse me of smoking something other than premium cigars" tweet. But it is a fact of life of President Trump.

Mr. Manafort's case is the first investigated by Mr. Mueller to come to trial. They were indicted together. Prosecutors prefer to avoid taking action that could be seen as affecting an election, and many Democrats are still seething at the FBI's decision in 2016 to reopen and then reclose the Hillary Clinton email investigation less than two weeks before Election Day.

NPR White House correspondent Tamara Keith has been following all of this, and she is here to walk us through this timeline. Tamara, always good to talk to you.
