McGregor (21-3) simultaneously held the featherweight and lightweight championship belts during his meteoric UFC career, but he hasn't fought in MMA since taking the 155-pound lightweight belt from Eddie Alvarez in November 2016.

He took a year out of the sport as he turned to professional boxing, losing to Floyd Mayweather Jnr last summer. The 30-year old Irish superstar recently plead guilty to a single violation of disorderly conduct as part of a plea deal that involves no jail time and will not affect McGregor's travel visa. As expected, Dana White hosted the UFC 25th Anniversary Press Conference, and he was joined on stage by a litany of MMA fighters, including Tyron Woodley, Darren Till, Nicco Montano, Valentina Shevchenko, Derek Brunson, and Israel Adesanya.

He was stripped of his belt for being inactive and Nurmagomedov subsequently won the 155lb title by beating Al Iaquinta as the Russian extended his winning record to 26 straight fights.

The UFC dramatically announced the matchup on Friday with a promotional video to close a news conference promoting its slate of fight cards for the rest of 2018.

Former two-weight world champion McGregor has wanted to face Nurmagomedov for some time.

McGregor had initiated the bus attack in response to Nurmagomedov and his team's cornering of Artem Lobov, who is one of the Irishman's good friends, ahead of UFC 223.

McGregor will bid to reclaim the lightweight title, which he was forced to give up due to inactivity. They're bad mouthing me, saying I turned down fights.

The UFC did not disclose the terms of the fight agreement. The MMA company has two pay-per-views on the horizon, UFC 229 and 230, and Dana White booked two big matches for the respective events.

As it played, Diaz abruptly left the presser he was at and tweeted "I'm not fighting on that show (expletive) the UFC".
