Iran sees China as ‘pivotal’ to salvaging its nuclear deal

Historic deal on Iran's nuclear program from 2015 provides for the removal of sanctions against Iran in exchange for limiting its opportunities for the enrichment and storage of nuclear materials.

Despite the protests, Iranian leaders have reacted skeptically to Trump's offer of talks, insisting that the U.S. first rejoin the nuclear deal.

Worldwide sanctions were lifted under the pact between world powers and Tehran in return for curbs on Iran's nuclear program.

Key Trump administration figures, including national security advisor John Bolton, have called for regime change in the past, although the official line is that Washington only wants a change in its "behaviour".

Iran's currency plumbed new depths this week ahead of August 7, when Washington is due to reimpose a first lot of sanctions following Trump's withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal. "They have got to behave like a normal country", he said, describing Iranian leaders as "bad actors". The government pledged last week to provide basic commodities to the poor, but many emphasized feelings of panic among Iranians as a result of rising US-Iranian tensions. "That's the behavioral change that we're looking for from the Iranian regime", Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Metro TV in Jakarta.

Starting this week, Washington will re-impose sanctions on Iran's purchases of USA dollars, its trade in gold and precious metals, and its dealings with metals, coal and industrial-related software.

According to Pompeo, the restoration of sanctions against Iran is an important pillar in U.S. policy. While details remain unclear as to how the currency will operate, Tehran hopes that the new coin will meet the needs of Iranians who had used cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin to not only avoid sanctions on global transactions, but also as a vehicle of capital flight.

One hundred and eighty days later, on November 4, will see Iran barred from its ability to buy or sell petroleum products, and foreign entities will be prevented by the US from trading with its central bank.

Trump and other officials have expressed hopes that the sanctions and demonstrations will help put pressure on the government to come back to the negotiating table.

Supporters of the Iran agreement have long argued that the USA departure would alienate European allies who partnered with the U.S.in the negotiations.

He later said in a message on Twitter that the United States was "deeply concerned about reports of Iranian regime's violence against unarmed citizens" and urged respect for human rights. The downturn has sparked waves of protests across Iran. Sanctions on trade in Iranian metals and automobiles go back into effect Monday.
