  • Ohio to have a sales-tax holiday

People may wait to make large item purchases and increase sales during the tax exempt period, though Wisconsin's holiday limits this significantly. Hollenbeck says many shoppers are confused about purchases that quality-or don't-for tax free status.

During the three-day weekend, Florida shoppers won't have to pay the usual sales tax on many items such as clothes, shoes and school supplies.

The holiday begins at midnight Friday and runs through 11:59 a.m. Sunday.

School instructional materials are defined by the state tax department as, "reference books, reference maps and globes, textbooks and workbooks".

For five days Wisconsin is eliminating its sales tax on select items and stores are preparing to be busy.

State Rep. Paula Davis, R-Baton Rouge, who authored Act 1 from the third Special Session of the year, said the sales tax holidays weren't discussed in the debate on her bill "because it was already a dead issue".

The tax exemption applies to most school supplies selling for $15 or less per item; also, most clothing and footwear for $60 or less per item. The state will waive taxes on certain school supplies and clothing, energy and water efficient appliances and hurricane preparedness items.

Looking good at school will cost less this weekend. Coupons and discounts available for items under the tax-free list may still be applied to reduce the item's sales price. Coats, hats, jackets and even swimsuits will be tax free this weekend.

The study also found that OH counties that border other states experienced a 15.48 percent increase in sales tax collection, leading to the conclusion that many out-of-state families traveled to OH to take part in the tax holiday.

"They're losing a ton of money when they do this", Lumley said.
