Kohli’s ‘mic drop’ adds "spice" to five-Test series, says Root

  • England v India – Specsavers First Test – Day One – Edgbaston

Before his dismissal, Root became the fastest England player to reach 6,000 runs in Test cricket, and just the 15th overall. He got Cook out with a peach in the first innings and has repeated that feat once again.

England´s Keaton Jennings tried to defuse any potential bad feeling by saying: "Everybody is entitled to celebrate how they want to".

Since 2012, no Test team have conceded more runs for the last wicket than England.

India would have ended with far less if it wasn't for Kohli withstanding a thorough examination of his skill and temperament.

Joe Root says that he welcomes the spice that Virat Kohli's "mic-drop" celebration will add to the England-India Test series, after his dismissal to Kohli's direct-hit run-out turned the tide of England's innings on the first day at Edgbaston.

Stokes, introduced after lunch, showed why he is such an important part of this England side with an aggressive spell. Sam Curran stays unbeaten for 67-ball 24* with James Anderson at the opposite end.

Despite losing partners at regular intervals, Kohli's determination did not waver.

The ball continued to swing throughout the day, and Kohli did not have a single partnership over fifty, before he took matters into his own hands with Umesh Yadav, India's number 11, at the other end. There were many unplayable balls inbetween, but Kohli did not play a shot in anger, underlining his intention to bat as long as possible.

Jennings was well set on 42 when he fell to Mohammed Shami, inside edging a short of a length delivery onto his stumps via his pads.

It was only now that Kohli stood up to dominate the bowlers.

But, not for the first time, he failed to convert a century into a hundred, although the fault lay as much with Bairstow as Root.

- Isa Guha (@isaguha) August 2, 2018Since 2000, this is only the 3rd time Indian openers are not separated after the first ten overs in their first innings of a tour played in SENA (SA, Eng, NZ, Aus) countries. He did exactly that.

Ashwin registered his best figures in Test cricket across South Africa, England and Australia as the hosts lost six wickets for 69 runs in the final session of play.
