  • Aurora Police: Man shot and killed by officer had just shot armed intruder inside home

Aurora Police released a statement Monday afternoon that said an officer shot and killed a resident who appeared to be defending his home from an intruder early Monday morning. One of the callers reportedly told 911 that a man broke into her home. As soon as he entered the house, they found "very chaotic and violent scene", according to the statement.

Aurora police also did not say whether the victim was handcuffed or provided medical aid before he was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

APD confirmed that the juvenile inside of the home sustained non-life-threatening injuries from the deceased intruder.

Aurora police haven't said whether Black was inside his home or outside it when he was shot.

Shortly after 1:30 a.m., the Aurora Police Department says officers responded to a home near the intersection of East Montview Boulevard and Iola Street for a reported break-in. "We are providing assistance through our victim advocates to help the family of the deceased resident through this very hard time".

The Denver Police Department is assisting with the investigation, Aurora police spokesman Kenneth Forrest told the Washington Post on Tuesday.

Investigators have not released the names of the resident or the suspected intruder, and the officer was placed on administrative leave.

A family member identified the man as Richard Black, an Army veteran. Because this incident occurred within Adams County, the facts of the investigation will be presented to the Office of the District Attorney for a determination of whether criminal charges should be filed against any involved person.

An investigation is ongoing.

Cops gunned down a grandfather in his own home after he shot an intruder and called the police. The police department said it would be holding a news conference later this week to give more information about the incident.
