  • The polar bear was shot dead

A second guard fatally shot the polar bear after it attacked a guard assigned to protect tourists from the MS Bremen cruise ship on Svalbard's northernmost island, German cruise company Hapag-Lloyd Cruises said, according to the BBC.

Last month, a 31-year-old Canadian man was killed while protecting his children from a polar bear in a popular Canadian fishing and hunting spot.

Reportedly two guards went ashore in advance of passengers in order to sweep the area for polar bears.

The injured man was taken by helicopter to Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen Island for medical treatment.

An unidentified man was attacked and hurt by a polar bear on Norway's Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, newspaper Aftenposten reported Saturday.

News of the shooting was criticized on social media by observers who blamed the cruise line for intruding on the polar bear's habitat.

A polar bear was shot and killed in Norway after attacking a polar bear guard.

And despite the fact that the polar bear injured the guard, Twitter is furious that a threatened species was killed.

He suffered non-life-threatening head injuries and is said to be in a stable condition. "As soon as such an animal approaches, the shore leave would be stopped immediately".

He explained that usually, if a wild bear is seen, guards "shoot into the air" to scare the animal away. They then set up a land station and check the area again to make sure that there are no polar bears in sight. "One of the guards was unexpectedly attacked by a polar bear that had not been spotted and he was unable to react himself". "We are extremely sorry that this incident has happened". In Arctic regions, their numbers have declined - a development linked to the loss of sea ice.

He was accompanying a tourist expedition from the MS Bremen of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises on Saturday. Polar bears are also facing extinction due to global warming. "Customers need to start asking themselves if they feel good about a native bear being shot dead to enable their selfish intrusion into this lovely creature's home", wrote one upset poster.
