Pakistan parties demand new elections

  • Elections agency says Imran Khan won Pakistan's election, but needs a coalition

"[PML-N] would play the role of a strong opposition", said Shehbaz Sharif, the PML-N president and brother of Nawaz Sharif, according to the English-language Dawn newspaper. He has begun coalition talks to form the government after his party won 116 of 269 contested seats in the National Assembly.

When asked who will be the next chief ministers of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he said that the matter would be decided by PTI chairman Imran Khan.

Besides these three major parties, Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal Pakistan won 13 seats, Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan six seats, Pakistan Muslim League and Balochistan Awami Party four seats each, Balochistan National Party and Grand Democratic Alliance two seats each, Awami Muslim League Pakistan, Awami National Party, Jamhoori Wattan Party and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaniat one seat each.

It was their first call since Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party emerged victorious from the July 25 vote that has been marred by claims of pre-election rigging and irregularities on the day.

In this regard, PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that many independent candidates were those who couldn't be allotted the PTI ticket due to which they contest on their own. While banking on the PTI's success as a regional party, Khan and his anti-graft mantra struck a chord with young and middle-class Pakistanis.

New Delhi has been maintaining that Pakistan must stop terror activities from its soil for any meaningful talks between the two countries to resolve the outstanding issues.

PML-N leader Shehbaz Sharif said on Saturday that he was "outraged" by the killing of a party member in the northern city of Mansehra and that demanding a recount was a party's legal right.

Khan was also widely seen as the preferred candidate of the country's powerful military, which has directly ruled Pakistan for nearly half its independent existence since 1947, and has maintained an outsize influence over politics throughout that period.

"We have a lot of hopes for the new government".

European Union election observers expressed concerns that there was "a notable lack in equality of opportunity" in the vote, which was "not as good" as the country's previous election in 2013. He'll need the Pakistan Peoples' Party's help.

But 115 seats is still short of an outright majority. "We hope that it will be a straightforward government that is free of thieves and that cares about the country", she said. "We welcome engagement with them in a way that we think will benefit each of our two countries".

Pakistan is struggling to avert a currency crisis that has presented the new government with one of its biggest challenges.

No date has yet been set for protests announced over the weekend by parties including the PML-N.
