North Korea said to be working on new missiles

  • North and South Korea are set to hold joint military talks on Tuesday

Reuters quotes an official as saying it is unclear how far the work has gone.

Despite the new evidence suggesting otherwise, Conway seemed dismissive of the news, which indicated that North Korea had resumed its nuclear program and not taken concrete steps to denuclearize, as Trump insisted they would.

North Korea's statement was apparently not in sync with the U.S. as Mr Pompeo said that there was progress being made on North Korea's denuclearisation exercise.

At the United Nations, the United States asked a UN sanctions committee to halt all deliveries of refined oil products to North Korea after accusing Pyongyang of using illegal imports to exceed a cap on permissible deliveries.

What did the report say?

USA intelligence agencies indicate North Korea is building new missiles, officials told The Washington Post on Monday, weeks after President TrumpDonald John TrumpYemeni-American man kills himself after family blocked from entering United States by Trump admin Dershowitz on MSNBC panel: "Don't you dare accuse me" of defending Trump Bannon slams Kochs: "What they have to do is shut up and get with the program" MORE declared the nation is "no longer a Nuclear Treat".

The factory reportedly produced two ICBMs, including the Hwasong-15 - a missile capable of reaching the US East Coast.

The pictures show that at least one and possibly two liquid-fueled ICBMs are being worked on. This intelligence has been backed up by satellite images that appear to show activity at a known uranium-enrichment facility.

"[The facility] is not dead, by any stretch of the imagination", said Mr Lewis.

A truck and trailer similar to ones used in the past to move missiles was seen in one satellite photo, said the official. Melissa Hanham, a North Korea expert at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, tells the BBC that satellite images show there has been "regular traffic in and out of the building" at the Sanumdong facility-and the pattern didn't change throughout peace talks in Singapore and the DMZ. What they're offering is: "They keep the bomb, but they stop talking about it".

That assessment by a U.S. think tank was also based on satellite images.

Ms Hanham added that while that experts at MIIS could not "find a way to confirm the [intelligence] leak", the information has matched evidence from satellite imagery.

An official told the Reuters news agency that a liquid-fuelled ICBM didn't "pose almost the threat that a solid-fuelled one would because they take so long to fuel". It has in the past two years quickly advanced its nuclear programme.

Trump and Kim signed an agreement which included North Korea committing "to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

Pompeo, charged with nailing down the details of the Singapore commitment, travelled to Pyongyang in early July for what apparently was a fruitless visit.

The reported new missile construction follows Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's testimony last week in which he told senators Pyongyang continues to make nuclear fissile material, without indicating whether the hermit state was building new missiles.
