Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump's choice to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, arrives for a private meeting with Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) announced on Monday that the nominee has his support.

Paul cited concerns over "privacy" and "the Fourth Amendment" as being the basis for hesitating to back Kavanaugh. "Each nominee however, must be judged on the totality of their views character and opinions", Paul wrote.

Some liberals fumed on Twitter that Paul's decision was predictable and he had merely gotten attention for himself by initially "faking opposition" to Kavanaugh. He also praised Kavanaugh's record on property rights and views on due process, war powers and separation of powers, as well has his "strong defenses" of the First and Second Amendments.

The conservative Judicial Crisis Network has launched advertising in Alabama pressuring Jones, a Democrat in a red-leaning state, to confirm Kavanaugh, saying the vote "will show who Doug Jones really is".

Republican strategists tell Fox News that if the West Virginia Democratic senator votes "no" on the Supreme Court nominee, he upsets voters, but if he votes 'yes, ' he upsets donors.

"Of course, my vote is not a single-issue vote, and much of my reading and conversation has been in trying to figure out exactly how good Judge Kavanaugh will be on other issues before the Court", Paul added.

Manchin, who is facing a push in West Virginia to support confirmation, did not come out with a position on confirmation after the meeting, instead describing it as "productive". Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) have vowed to take their time in evaluating Kavanaugh, and have both expressed concern that he might rule against Roe vs. Wade, the 1973 decision recognizing a woman's right to have an abortion. And on Friday, after negotiations with Democrats failed to produce a consensus on what documents should be sought ahead of a hearing on Kavanaugh's nomination, Grassley went ahead with a request to the Bush library for documents related to his work for the White House. "I would like to see them just say, 'Look, OK, we will get this to you'".

Kavanaugh's nomination has delighted Second Amendment advocates - and anxious gun law supporters that his ascendancy to the high court would make it harder to curb the proliferation of guns.

With Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) unable to travel to Washington for health reasons, Republicans need unamimous party support for Kavanaugh in order to confirm him this fall.
