  • The al Aqsa compound is one of the most fractious issues in the Israel Palestinian conflict

Shortly before 3 pm, the bridge of the ship wrote on Twitter that Israel Navy officials had "hijacked" the ship and said the military would use "any means necessary" to prevent the protesters from reaching Gaza.

Israeli forces attacked one of the Freedom Flotilla ships on Sunday as it was approaching the shores of the besieged Gaza Strip and redirected its sail toward the southern Israeli seaport of Ashdod.

Unite national secretary Gerard Hehir said the union had received a direct report from Treen, who was in Givon Prison.

An activist group affiliated with the boat, the Al-Awda (The Return), said 22 people and a cargo of medical supplies were onboard.

The IDF intercepted a Norwegian-flagged ship attempting to breach the Gaza Strip's maritime blockade and transferred the vessel to the port of Ashdod, the army confirmed on Sunday.

Malaysia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Monday that a Malaysian - Dr Mohd Afandi Salleh from MyCare - was among those detained.

However, the recent developments in Gaza have ensured that Israel has tightened its blockade on the coastal enclave after imposing additional restrictions on the entry of goods, particularly raw and construction materials, which threatens an unprecedented escalation of the humanitarian crisis.

Two years ago, 13 women, including Nobel Peace Prize victor Mairead Maguire of Northern Ireland, were detained and then deported after their sailboat, "Women's Boat to Gaza", was stopped around 35 nautical miles off the coast of Gaza on its way to break the blockade.

Al-Khudari said, in a press statement, that this prohibition is causing the Palestinian economy, which is already deteriorating due to the blockade, and Israeli policies, direct and indirect losses of millions of dollars.

Dr Wan Azizah, who is also Women, Family and Community Development Minister, said that as such the blockade of Gaza should come to an end and the freedom of movement for all Palestinians must be restored.

In September 2010, Turkey suspended its military ties with Israel and expelled the Israeli envoy from Ankara over Tel Aviv's refusal to apologize for the killing.

Local Palestinian reacted to the arrests by rioting, which were met with standard crowd disbursement methods by Israeli forces.

The protests were part of the Great March of Return demonstrations along the border.
