  • Four million people have been left out of the list which throws their citizenship into doubt

As opposition parties on Monday created uproar in Lok Sabha over publication of the second list of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam alleging creation of division the state on religious lines, home minister Rajnath Singh lashed out at them "for creating an atmosphere of panic and fear" and "politicizing a sensitive issue". Ultimately it is Bengal which will suffer.

"People are being isolated through a game plan".

Hajela also said people would be able to reapply for inclusion at the sewa kendras.

Around 40.07 lakh applicants, however, did not find a place in the historic document, touted to be a proof of Assamese identity.

A first draft published last December included only 19 million people as legal citizens. Its a plan to throw out Bengali speaking people and Biharis.

Mamta Banerjee slammed the NRC final draft by stating that the Assam government and the center played "divide and rule" politics.

Villagers wait outside the National Register of Citizens (NRC) centre to get their documents verified by government officials, at Mayong Village in Morigaon district, in the northeastern state of Assam, India July 8, 2018.

He assured thatpeople, who have been left out of the list can file claims and objections inthe Higher Administrative level and later in the Foreigners' Tribunal. It is happening under the supervision of the Supreme Court.

# 11:15 am: Even someone whose name is not in the final list can approach the foreigners' tribunal.

"For this remarkable feat, I extend my heartiest congratulations to the 55,000 officials engaged in the process of updating NRC and the people living across the Barak and Brahmaputra valleys, plains and hills of the state", he said.

"This is just a draft and not the final list" India's census commissioner Sailesh, who uses only one name, told reporters in Guwahati, the state's principal city. The biggest challenge for India would be to deal with these people who will become stateless if their names do not make it to the final list. These forms will be available from August 7 to September 28 and the authorities will then inform them the reason for their names being left out.

The applicants can also call 24x7 toll free numbers-15107 from Assam and 18003453762 from outside Assam- by referring to their 21-digit Application Receipt Number (ARN).

The next step will be to file the claim in another prescribed form which will be available from August 30 to September 28. The final draft comprising the names of 2, 89, 83,677 people of Assam was published online by the Registrar General of India. The candidates are welcome to check their names by visiting the NRC website and through SMS.

"The NRC in Assam is being implemented following the orders of the court (Supreme Court)".

The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has taken a special initiative to set up a 24-hour control room at its central office here to help people.
