In the occupied West Bank, another territory where Palestinians want independence, a teenaged Palestinian knifed a Jewish settler to death and wounded two others on Thursday before being shot and killed.

The Israeli Shin Bet, Israel's General Security Services, said that the Palestinian was a close friend of another attack suspect identified as Omar al-Abed, who carried out an attack a year ago in the illegal Israeli settlement of Halamish north of Ramallah district. The IDF said that clashes broke out after around 150 Palestinian demonstrators threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at the Israeli soldiers, as well as burning tires.

Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman tweeted that expanding the Adam settlement was the "best answer to terrorism".

The Palestinian news agency Wafa said three people were arrested.

Israel says the demonstrations are a cover for Hamas attacks aimed at Israeli border communities.

Much of the worldwide community views the settlements as illegal and an obstacle to peace.

The protests also demand a "right of return" for descendants of Palestinian refugees to ancestral homes in what is now Israel. Eyewitnesses in Adam reported seeing a suspicious vehicle leaving the settlement shortly after the attack. "When will President Abbas and Palestinian leaders condemn the violence?" he wrote on Twitter.

The attack came after a period of relative calm in the West Bank.

Israelis have faced a wave of Palestinian attacks, mostly stabbings, on civilians and soldiers over the past two years but these types of assaults have declined recently.

The last stabbing attack in a West Bank settlement was in April 2018, when a Palestinian tried to stab an Israeli with a screwdriver near a gas station in an industrial area connected to the Maale Adumim settlement east of Jerusalem.

In a statement, Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza praised the "courageous operation" in the West Bank without claiming responsibility for it.

The army said in a statement Wednesday it was "targeting Hamas military posts in the Gaza Strip" after soldiers were shot at.
