I respect Mesut Ozil's Germany decision, says Arsenal boss Unai Emery

  • “This is the saddest thing to read as an athlete, and more importantly as a human being,” said Sania Mirza as she came out in support of Mesut Ozil

The 29-year-old quit the national side on Sunday citing "racism and disrespect" due to his Turkish roots as key to the decision.

The midfielder cited "racism and disrespect" as reasons for his decision to quit global football which the German Football Association "emphatically rejected".

Mesut Ozil was selected among the squad which travelled to Singapore for the International Champions Cup which Arsenal will be participating in and the Arsenal manager made the comments from the Asian country. Emery said: 'It is a personal decision from Mesut and I respect it.

"As a team we support him here, we try to make sure he feels good, so he can train and perform at his best".

Unai Emery says he respects Mesut Ozil's decision to retire from worldwide football with Germany and wants to offer him a semblance of normality at Arsenal.

Germany´s football federation swiftly denied the allegation of racism, while Erdogan called Ozil to praise his decision - which follows a resurgence of the German far right.

"He has experience, he has quality and he has a great mentality and we are going to help him feel good and to show his quality with us", said Emery.

"Arguably the issue that has frustrated me the most over the past couple of months has been the mistreatment from the DFB, and in particular the DFB President Richard Grindel", he said.

"He feels here with us that he can work every day, and it is good for us that he chose to come here and work with us before our two matches". He has taken full part in double training sessions on tour but the match against Atletico Madrid on Thursday will come too soon.

"For him it´s one thing with the national team and another with us", Emery said.

"In the eyes of Grindel and his supporters, I am German when we win, but I am an immigrant when we lose".

"Obviously his decision is his decision and everyone should respect that".

"He has been working really hard so hopefully he will be fit".
