Blood moon should be an eerie spectacle this Friday evening

  • The eclipse will not be visible from North America

The next rendezvous between the Sun and the Moon will then take place on January 21, 2019 for a total eclipse that will be visible in North America. If the summer weather cooperates, the eclipse will be visible from the Netherlands. South-eastern observers will be able to see the eclipse for somewhat longer than north-western ones.

Eastern Europe: The total eclipse will start in Eastern European hubs like Bucharest and Moscow at 10:30 p.m. local time.

The Virtual Telescope Project will share a live stream of the lunar eclipse and Mars at its brightest just a few degrees apart above the skyline of Rome.

A rare astronomical event set to take place this week could herald the "end of days", according to some who have been following the "blood moon" phenomenon, with a number of Evangelical leaders even linking the celestial event to the USA embassy move to Jerusalem. "If you were on the moon, you would see a total solar Eclipse because the Earth would block the Sun". The moon, closest to the center of the shadow, will showcase the maximum eclipse at 1:51 am. The only light that reflects from the surface is refracted (change of direction) by earth's atmosphere; this light tends to appear reddish, which is why it is known as Blood Moon. Mars opposition that had occurred in August 2003 brought the two planets at the closest distance in approximately 60,000 years. In the south, you can spot Jupiter and Saturn, and in the west, Venus can be seen.

As if that was not enough, sky-watchers should get a glorious view of Jupiter in the south-west and have a chance of catching the International Space Station (ISS) sailing overhead.

"It's the brightest thing in the sky apart from aircraft", said Mr Scagell.

Scientists have perfectly adequate explanations for the phenomenon other than impending armageddon. "And this blood moon, which will be the longest blood moon of this century, is happening in the 70th year of Israel being a nation", he said.

Canberrans won't be able to catch the whole show, however, because the moon will set before the total eclipse finishes. "It's not surprising people were terrified by it".

But don't worry, even if you don't manage to find a ideal spot, you'll still be able to get a good view of the red moon as it rises in the sky.
