Iranian leader says Trump’s ’empty threats’ not worth a response

  • The Latest: Schumer chides Trump for heated rhetoric on Iran

Protests have mounted in recent weeks in Iran, as the country struggles with an economic crisis that has grown more severe since President Trump's decision in May to pull the USA out of the Iran nuclear deal and reimpose sanctions on the country.

United States officials are stepping up diplomatic efforts to pressure countries to stop importing Iranian oil.

As Pompeo noted in his speech to Iranian-Americans and others in California on Sunday, the centerpiece will be the re-imposition of USA economic sanctions; the first batch will go back into force August 4, targeting the Iranian automotive sector and trade in gold and other metals. The rhetoric is not particularly different from North Korea's, if more hollow: Iran, unlike North Korea, has no nuclear weapons, and there's no way it can hold off the U.S. conventional military might.

The tweet was apparently in response to comments Rouhani made that day cautioning Trump about the devastation of a US-Iran wartime conflict. At a time when Iranian citizens are organizing protests and strikes about everything from corruption to drought, Pompeo's message was perfectly timed. "COLOR US UNIMPRESSED", Zarif said, adding that "we've been around for millennia & seen fall of empires, incl our own, which lasted more than the life of some countries".

Trump's latest tweet telling Iran it would suffer "consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before" is an almost-verbatim rehash of his August 2017 threat to North Korea; then, Trump promised "fire, fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before".

"Reckless Iran rhetoric creates risks - especially if words are unbacked by actionable strategy", Senator Richard Blumenthal said. Trump said in May that he was withdrawing from the agreement signed by the Barack Obama administration. He's author of the book, The Iranian Constitutional Revolution and the Clerical Leadership of Khurasani.

Within hours, Iran's state-owned news agency IRNA dismissed Mr Trump's tweet, describing it as a "passive reaction" to Mr Rouhani's remarks.

The State Department, though, says no known member of the Iranian exile group was invited to Pompeo's speech.

"America wants nothing less than [to] destroy Iran" but "Trump can not do a damn thing against Iran", the commander added. It will resonate with a population that feels cheated out of the economic boon promised from the 2015 nuclear deal, and it's a reminder that America has no quarrel with Iranians, only their leaders.
