However, Tuesday's tweet suggests he might not believe it's a witch hunt after all. And he's been nearly alone in defending remarks - since walked back - that he viewed Putin's denials of interfering in the 2016 election as more credible than evidence compiled by United States intelligence agencies.

Republicans were the only demographic group - out of party, gender, education, age and race - where a majority did not believe there was compromising information.

The U.S. intelligence community concluded after the 2016 election that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election to hurt Hillary Clinton's campaign and help Trump win.

The numbers released on Tuesday show Mr Trump's approval at 38 per cent, with a 58 per cent disapproving. Many Republicans joined Democrats in criticizing Trump's performance.

Trump was widely condemned following his press conference alongside Putin in Helsinki, prompting the president and his officials to issue several corrections throughout the week. The rest have no opinion.

Trump explained that, because of his tough stance on Putin, "they will be pushing very hard for the Democrats".

Partisans split in their ratings of Trump's meeting with Putin, but Republicans are less united in support for Trump than in other recent polls about his presidency.

According to the data site FiveThirtyEight.com which compiles a running, statistically weighted average of dozens of regular polls, Trump's average approval rating as of Saturday, July 21, stood at 41.7 percent.

Democrats, predictably, were far more likely to accept the intelligence agency findings, with 89 percent agreeing that Russian Federation interfered in the election, and only eight percent of Democrats disbelieving the intelligence agencies' assessments.

What's scary about this entire situation, however, is that we, as fans of Chris Evans and mainly intelligent-minded individuals, realize what Trump is doing.

Mr Trump's handling of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation relations also was judged. In what world is Russian Federation not behind everything that Donald Trump is doing? A smaller 58 percent majority of conservatives approve of Trump's conduct at the summit.

Speaking before Congress is an honour often given to high-profile world leaders who come to Washington. That is an improvement on last November, when the margin between those who said weaker vs. those who said stronger was 27 percentage points.

The president ramped up his rhetoric against the Islamic Republic on Sunday, saying on Twitter that the US won't tolerate Iran's "DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH" - a response to a warning Iran's president made to Trump.

Ryan and McConnell said they had no plans to ask Putin to address a joint session of Congress, a typical honor for visiting foreign leaders. Sixty-one percent of the survey's respondents said strengthening U.S. -Russia relations is in the nation's best interests. In contrast, most Republicans - 58 percent - appear hopeful that Russian Federation will not interfere in USA elections this fall.

Unfortunately for Trump, many people are capable of remembering what happened just last Monday. "They did it the last time". Men were slightly less disapproving of the president's handling of the summit than women, but the gap was not statistically significant.

So be like Chris Evans, and call out what Trump is trying to do, because at the end of the day, who doesn't want to be like Captain America? But younger and older Americans tended to offer similar assessments to other questions.
