Starwatch: red marvel that is a lunar eclipse

  • The Moon is going to turn blood red in what is expected to be the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century

The part of Canada with the best vantage point of the total lunar eclipse will be from Newfoundland, just as the Moon rises at night.

Keep in mind to look up in the sky later this week because a historic lunar eclipse will be visible in South Africa.

Though the United States won't see a lunar eclipse, the moon will still be full and appear reddish/orange Friday evening.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly behind the earth and into its shadow.

NASA said the total lunar eclipse will last almost two hours Friday night, turning the moon a reddish orange color. "And this blood moon, which will be the longest blood moon of this century, is happening in the 70th year of Israel being a nation", he said.

"At this time, the moon passes into the shadow of the Earth, blocking the light from the sun". Instead of light hitting the moon's surface, Earth's shadow falls on it. While it won't be the century's longest, that "blood moon" is expected to last a respectable 1 hour and 2 minutes!

SCIENCE Eclipse

Blood Moon is coming this Friday - on 27 July - so if you've got big plans you might want to put them on hold. It'll be a lovely four hours there, hanging in our sky, passing above us with high visibility (hopefully) across the whole world - except for North America.

Also of interest, Mars will be visible very close to the eclipsed moon.

"Meanwhile the greatest eclipse will be visible at 01-22 PST on July 28 which is going to be a historical moment", the PMD official said.

A partial lunar eclipse happens when only a part of the moon enters Earth's shadow.

"It will last several hours - when you get a real feeling of the Earth and moon shifting in space", astronomer Tom Kerss, of the Royal Observatory Greenwich, which will live stream the eclipse, told The Guardian. The entire USA won't be able to see a full lunar eclipse again until January. The moon will start to turn red from about 5.30am. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, NASA's robotic spacecraft orbiting the moon, will experience it first-hand.

Earlier in the year, the super blood moon made our months roller coasters of up and down emotions and this is no different.
