Pakistan Race Tightens on Eve of Historic Vote

  • Imran Khan has deliberately ignored the Indian media during his campaign rallies

The leader of a conservative political party alligned to former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif has pledged to take Pakistan ahead of its arch rival India, saying he would emulate the leadership of Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

For all these reasons, the human rights commission has said there are "ample grounds" to question the legitimacy of the polls, "with alarming implications for Pakistan's transition to an effective democracy".

The leading among them are Mumbai-terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed-led banned Jamat-ud Dawah's candidates who are fighting with an aim to make Pakistan a "citadel of Islam".

Those who voted for Sharif may also be annoyed that the three-times elected prime minister has been never been allowed to complete a term.

Tens of millions of Pakistanis will vote on Wednesday in an election that could have repercussions for the entire region.

DIG Operations Lahore Shahzad Akbar said that the smart application has geo-tagged all polling stations.

Police officials can track the presence of police officers deployed at a polling station through an application. The counting of votes will be done on the spot soon after polling is concluded and results will be announced within 24 hours.

Respondents listed top two election issues as access to clean water and gas for cooking, each at 17 per cent. Inflation and corruption were ranked last, at 1 per cent each.

The race to be the country's next prime minister is tight, but most polls are predicting a narrow victory for the former Pakistan cricket captain Imran Khan.

Recent polls show PTI's popularity climbing nationally.

Despite a massive electoral exercise, there is a big question if the election would bring much needed political and economic stability in the country.

At a PML-N rally in the military garrison city of Rawalpindi, anger simmered over what participants said was engineering by "the establishment" - referring to the military. This would be the largest deployment for any election in the country's history.

The PPP could emerge as a coalition kingmaker if no party wins a majority, as many expect.

A candidate for Mr Sharif's party was jailed for life on Saturday by an anti-narcotics court, just days before the vote.

Like many in the past have said, Pakistan's ties with Afghanistan matter more than its India policy, to avoid getting caught amid adversarial powers on Kabul's flanks remains vital.
