  • The administration of Park Geun-hye has been accused of restricting access to the defectors

North Korean and United States military officials met at the inter-Korea border Sunday to discuss repatriation of the remains of American troops killed during the Korean War, a report said.

"Today's talks were productive and cooperative and resulted in firm commitments", Pompeo said. Pompeo was not part of the talks.

The North is believed to have about 200 sets of remains ready to be transferred, and U.S. Forces Korea has moved 100 caskets to the border area in anticipation that they will be turned over.

The report said the US planned to send cases to the Demilitarized Zone and that North Korea would place the remains in them. The sides also agreed to resume field operations to search for more remains in the North and to hold the working-level talks on Monday. The U.S. side was led by Maj. The multinational but U.S. -led U.N. Command was formed during the Korean War and now helps maintain the armistice on the peninsula.

It was the first time in nine years that US and North Korean generals held talks.

The North's state-run Korean Central News Agency said Monday that the amnesty would be granted for "those who had been convicted of the crimes against the country and people".

The decision to hold this meeting came after the United Nations Command agreed to North Korea's offer to hold a general-level meeting.

The statement said that those remarks were due to the fact that Washington had betrayed the spirit of last month's summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un by making unilateral demands on the complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization of North Korea.

Secretary Pompeo said both American and North Korean search teams would ramp-up their efforts to recover the missing remains of nearly 8,000 American servicemen.

About 7,700 USA soldiers are listed as missing from the Korean War.

North Korea's domestic newspaper Rodong Sinmun devoted a whole nine pages to the story.

A UNC official said he had no information to confirm the report, though preparations had been made for Sunday's talks.

There's speculation that Pyongyang is trying to fast-track discussions on more critical issues, such as reaching a declaration to formally end the war, which stopped on an armistice and not a peace treaty.

From 1996 to 2005, joint U.S. But what, if anything, North Korea may be willing to hand over remains unclear.

Among the missing foreign soldiers who are believed to have died in the conflict, around 165 were part of the Turkish Brigade, which supplied almost 15,000 troops to fight on the South's side during the war.
