Jeff Bezos' space company Blue Origin is one step closer to sending tourists into orbit after successfully completing the ninth test flight of its New Shepard rocket Tuesday from its test facility in west Texas.

The New Shepard rocket test launch was to test the vehicle escape motor which is created to propel the crew capsule away from the booster rocket. "We are stressing the rocket to test that astronauts can get away from an anomaly at any time during flight", the company said in a statement. Central Daylight Time to perform a high-altitude test of an escape motor.

It's part of a safety system meant to save lives once space tourists and others climb aboard for suborbital hops.

Wednesday's passenger was Mannequin Skywalker, plus science experiments. That's 74 miles or 119 kilometres. Those missions will rely on the bigger, more powerful New Glenn rocket still under development.

The most recent New Shepard launch, which took place in April went smoothly as well, with the rocket reaching nearly 107 kilometers, slightly higher than the company's typical target of about 100 kilometers, the altitude widely accepted as the boundary line for space.

Blue Origin has yet to announce when it will start selling tickets or how much flights will cost.
