  • FDA: Retailers cannot legally sell Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal following recall

"Retailers can not legally offer the cereal for sale and consumers should not purchase Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal", Thursday's FDA update said.

A sign hangs outside the Kellogg's factory near Manchester, Britain March 7, 2016.

"Retailers can not legally offer the cereal for sale and consumers should not purchase Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal", the agency said in a statement.

The FDA said on Thursday it would follow up with retailers to prevent the sale of the product.

In a post on Twitter Thursday, the CDC said Honey Smacks has been linked to 100 Salmonella infections in 33 states and warned, "Do not eat this cereal".

There has been one reported case in Ohio.

A total of 100 people have been sickened as a result; 30 people have been hospitalized.

Of those victims who were interviewed about what they ate, the most cited cereal was Honey Smacks. Customers should either throw away the product or may return their box of cereal to a store for a full refund. "Thoroughly wash the container with warm, soapy water before using it again, to remove harmful germs that could contaminate other food".

The CDC is warning people "Do not eat this cereal".

According to the FDA, the ages of those affected range from less than one year to 95 (median 57 years) and 68% of cases are female. Although most people recover without being treated, some may need to be hospitalized for severe diarrhea.

People infected with salmonella bacteria can show symptoms after just 12 hours, including diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps.
