Protesters descend upon Trump Tower, Supreme Court in wake of Kavanaugh nomination

  • Outside candidate for Supreme Court buoyed by McConnell's backing

Kavanaugh, a former Kennedy clerk, said that he was "deeply honored" to replace the retiring justice.

"Donald Trump's decision to nominate a reactionary ideologue like Brett Kavanaugh and shift the balance of the U.S. Supreme Court even further right represents a generational assault on justice, freedom, and our country's core democratic values", Dean tweeted. If confirmed, Kavanaugh is likely to be a reliable conservative vote who could weaken or imperil abortion rights, beef up support on the court for capital punishment and clamp down on the power of regulatory agencies.

Collins and Murkowski declined invitations to be present for Monday's Supreme Court announcement, along with three red state Democrats who voted to confirm Neil Gorsuch, Senators Joe Manchin, Heidi Heitkamp, and Joe Donnelly (along with Doug Jones, who wasn't in office at the time).

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said they will hold a confirmation vote this fall.

The senator had stumped publicly for her and called her an outstanding judge.

Ingraham said she found none of that "display. attractive to me".

He is the father of two girls and coaches their basketball teams.

McConnell reportedly spoke often to Trump and White House general counsel Don McGahn throughout the selection process and was anxious about the vast number of documents Kavanaugh had amassed during his 12 years on the D.C. appeals court could prove problematic. On the bright side, Kavanaugh worked for Ken Starr during his probe of President Bill Clinton, and is credited by pundits with some of the most salacious questions to that POTUS.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer says a weekend move by the Trump administration to undercut the Affordable Care Act is another reason for senators to closely scrutinize the president's Supreme Court nominee.

His wife, Ashley - who is from Abilene, Texas, and with whom he has two daughters, Margaret and Liza - served as a personal secretary to Bush while he was governor of Texas and in the White House.

"My most vivid memory of Brett was his thoughtful approach to an issue, not impulsive, not off the cuff".

"This nominee is very important what we would call in political science a "critical nominee", Johnson said Monday evening about Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh dissented from his court's 2011 conclusion that Obamacare, a law detested by conservatives, did not violate the U.S. Constitution, asserting that it was premature to decide the case's merits.

The official said Trump decided on Kavanaugh, a front-runner throughout the search process, because of his large body of jurisprudence cited by other courts, describing him as a judge that other judges read. Of the court's liberal justices, Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 85 and Stephen Breyer turns 80 next month, so Trump may well get another opportunity to cement conservative dominance of the court for years to come.

Meanwhile, Republicans sought to use Democrats' attacks against them, insisting that Kavanaugh is a "mainstream" pick (though it appears he would be one of the Court's most conservative justices), and Democratic resistance is unfair. Jennifer Mascott, a law professor at the Antonin Scalia Law School in Virginia, said she naturally reached out to Kavanaugh after her father died.

Here's why: Kavanaugh's court rarely issues opinions on Monday.

It can seem as if Kavanaugh has been getting ready for this moment for some time. Thomas, at 70, is the oldest of the court's remaining Republican appointees.
