  • Hurricane Beryl could hit parts of the Caribbean

Beryl is expected to hit the eastern Caribbean as a hurricane instead of dissipating, threatening islands still trying to recover from last year's storms, forecasters said Friday.

Beryl remains a very small storm with not much convection around it which is allowing the center to quickly push off to the WNW at 17 miles per hour and head for the Lesser Antilles Islands.

Hurricane Beryl lost some strength overnight but is still packing maximum-sustained winds of 75 miles per hour as it moves toward the Caribbean.

At 5:00 p.m. today, center of Tropical Storm Beryl is located near latitude 12.7 north, longitude 52.7 west or 565 miles or 900 km east southeast of Saint Lucia. A faster westward to west-northwestward motion is expected to begin over the weekend and continue through early next week.

Later Monday the storm is expected to head south of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, whipping the island with minimal tropical storm-force winds as it continues to weaken.

Forecasters said Beryl would likely weaken further after crossing the Lesser Antilles.

A hurricane watch is in effect for Dominica and a tropical storm watch is in effect for Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Martin and St. Barthelemy.

The government of Barbados has issued a Tropical Storm Warning and discontinued the Hurricane Watch for Dominica.

Forecasters said Beryl appears to have lost some of its organization from Friday afternoon, and they have lowered any expected strengthening.

"In most cases Beryl's impact on Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands will be like a robust tropical wave and not a hurricane", Miller said.

Gov. Ricardo Rossello said in a press conference late Saturday that the island could experience power outages and urged people without sturdy roofs to move in with relatives or a government shelter.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Beryl has a 50% chance of regenerating into a tropical cyclone over the Bahamas during the next 5 days.

The storm's trajectory remains uncertain and no coastal warnings are now in effect, but forecasters urge those along the coast of North Carolina to stay alert.
