WERTHEIMER: One of the most interesting things I think about the current court, with - when Judge Kennedy was on it, was how many Catholics there were. If the present Senate is unwilling to confirm the best nominee, then the seat can remain vacant during the election, and the people will elect a Senate who will confirm the best nominee. After law school, he served as a law clerk for Judge Ralph Guy Jr. a Judge on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and for Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.

"When the President has made up his mind, he wants to go", an aide told Axios, adding that staffers plan to persuade Trump to stick to his original timeline because the announcement would get more media coverage.

"I think I have it down to four people and I think of the four people, I have it down to three or two".

Starting from a list of 25 names vetted by conservative groups, Trump has also given serious consideration to federal appeals court judges Amul Thapar and Joan Larsen, and it's possible the White House will prepare materials on more people.

His pick could end up shifting the court's ideological tilt for years to come.

President Donald Trump is set to announce his pick for the Supreme Court next week.

Judge Thomas Hardiman, the runner-up to Justice Neil Gorsuch, is still in the mix, though seen as fourth on the list. Both senators supported all three of Trump's reported finalists when they were nominated as circuit court judges. "The American people since Trump became president have gone to airports to protect immigrants, they've marched for women's rights".

Trump, who is expected to reveal his nominee in the coming days, stressed in his weekly presidential address that the next Supreme Court justice should reject judicial activism and policy-making from the bench.

He is now serving as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in MI.

Arguing that "the faithful application of the Constitution is the bedrock of our freedom", the president said his pick will also have "impeccable credentials, great intellect, unbiased judgement and deep reverence for the laws and Constitution of the United States".

Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas says fellow Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, about the process. What the Trump two dozen get in return involves a measure of prestige and also something of a pain. Trump wants this process to move just as quickly. John McCain away from Washington, any defections by Republicans could begin to imperil a nominee. "It's obvious he has made pro-life issues a priority in his administration, their concern is absolutely valid and I'm happy to embrace that", said Mary Kate Knorr, Illinois Right to Life executive director.

Many progressive opponents of Barrett are pointing to a September 28, 2017, New York Times article by Laurie Goodstein that essentially concluded she was a member of a cult, a "small, tightly knit Christian group called People of Praise". Both Kethledge and Gorsuch once served Kennedy as law clerks, as did Kavanaugh. More than 40 federal district and circuit court judges have been confirmed to lifetime appointments so far during Trump's term, and those judges will have enormous sway in shaping legal arguments nationwide.

Barrett's profile rose rapidly past year with conservative groups after her confirmation hearing featured questioning from Democrats over how her Roman Catholic faith would affect her decisions. He has a personal connection to the president, having served with Trump's sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, on the Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
