They had dared to dream the biggest dream and came short by just the thinnest of margins, as Croatia booked their place in the semi-final and denied Russian Federation a dream Moscow date with England.

Russia's Igor Akinfeev during extra time. Denis Cheryshev (Russia) left footed shot from outside the box to the top left corner.

31 - Goal! Russia 1, Croatia 0.

The giant forward seemed to nearly accidentally touch the ball into the path of Cheryshev and with nearly nowhere to go, the 26-year-old unleashed a thunderous left-footed strike into the top corner to leave Danijel Subasic rooted to the spot and demonstrating exactly why Real Madrid afforded a place in their academy to the player.

The crowd erupted, but Croatia were undeterred and equalised just eight minutes later.

The reaction to Vida's goal was nearly one of shock as it crept through the legs of teammate Vedran Corluka and into the bottom corner, with the home crowd left temporarily silent and in disbelief as the goalscorer reeled away and ripped off his shirt in celebration.

After a lively start to the second half, Ivan Perisic should have sent Croatia ahead on the hour-mark but his low strike from the edge of the box crashed against the post. Andrej Kramaric, the Hoffenheim forward, comes in with Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic dropping out.

Croatia were quick to respond, levelling things up just before half time.

Harry Maguire and Dele Alli scored with headers in a 2-0 win over Sweden on Saturday, earning England's youthful team a match against Croatia for a place in the final on July 15.

But nearly immediately after making their third sub in the 88th minute, Subasic fell to the pitch grabbing his hamstring, and he was forced to continue after receiving treatment and made a save at his near post.

The game finished 2-2 after extra-time following a late equaliser by Russia's Mario Fernandes. Fedor Smolov tried to trick Subasic with a chip shot, but the execution was poor and Subasic was able to recover and swat the ball away after he dove to the ground.

And nearly immediately afterward, Croatia had their victor.

Vida removed his shirt as he ran away in celebration, possibly thinking Croatia were heading through.

Going to penalties will not be an ideal ploy for both sides with Russian Federation boasting Akinfeev between the posts while their opponents will have Danijel Subasic, who against Denmark became only the second keeper in World Cup history to make three saves in their shootout win.

Both goalkeepers made early saves in the shootout, with an injured Danijel Subasic stopping the opening shot from Fyodor Smolov. A miss from Mario Fernandes and Luka Modric's goal gave an advantage to Croatia. The host nation lost 4-3 the penalty shootout, which followed 2-2 draw in the regular and 30-minute overtime period.
