Pompeo to head to North Korea as doubts mount over denuclearization

  • Trump: 'possible' North Korea nuclear deal may not 'work out'

The State Department said Mr Pompeo would leave North Korea on Saturday for Tokyo and on Sunday hold talks with both Japanese and South Korean officials.

"If not for me", he added, "we would now be at War with North Korea!"

But Mr Trump dismissed suggestions that he had been premature in his declarations of success, tweeting: "In the meantime, no Rocket Launches or Nuclear Testing in 8 months".

The Middlebury Institute of International Studies report found that North Korea has recently expanded a factory complex in the eastern city of Hamhung that produces key engines for solid-fuel ballistic missiles.

According to Axios, which first reported the news, USA officials would only move forward with the meeting if Pyongyang provides evidence they are moving forward with denuclearization.

The U.S. side was "working to see whether they can prepare for high-level talks between Secretary Pompeo and Kim Jong Un and others in Pyongyang that would be a specific denuclearization road map, or at least significant dismantlement steps that could fill in a roadmap", he said.

The State Department says a senior USA diplomat held talks with North Korea in the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas over the weekend.

"Now we're saving a lot of money", Trump said of the cancellation of large-scale military drills that involve flights of U.S. bombers from the Pacific U.S. territory of Guam.

The United States has a plan that would lead to the dismantling of North's weapons of mass destruction (WMD) programs in a year, US national security adviser John Bolton said Sunday.

Pompeo last visited Pyongyang in May ahead of the Trump-Kim summit and traveled there secretly in early April while he was director of the Central Intelligence Agency. They also say the USA has an unrealistic approach to North Korea's denuclearization.

A USA official told The Associated Press that the Post's report was accurate and that the assessment reflected the consistent view across US government agencies for the past several weeks. But the Trump administration remains cautious; it renewed North Korean sanctions last month even after Trump's praise for his agreement with Kim in Singapore.

A senior U.S. intelligence official also said last week that Pyongyang was continuing to "deceive us on the number of facilities, the number of weapons, the number of missiles".

The planned visit comes amid reports that North Korea has been secretly expanding a major missile plant, potentially suggesting that the country doesn't plan to fully divest itself of its nuclear ambitions. "North Korea's intent to denuclearize has been verified only by words and, now with Pompeo expected to make another visit to Pyongyang, it's time to prove them with actions".

According to reports in South Korea, Sung Kim met with North Korea's Vice Foreign Minister Choi Sun Hee at Panmunjom for an hour and a half Sunday.

The North Koreans should know what to expect in these meetings, Nauert added: "We've had very clear conversations with them". Asked whether Bolton would join Pompeo for the trip to Pyongyang, she said, "Not to my awareness".
