  • US congressmen meet Russian officials in St. Petersburg

16 July in Helsinki, where they plan to meet US President Donald trump and the head of Russia Vladimir Putin, held several protests, reports Yle.

Putin "feels absolutely comfortable in all formats that are comfortable for his interlocutors", Peskov said, adding that the Kremlin "doesn't rule out" a private meeting between the two presidents. However, he took issue with President Trump's statement that he planned to discuss Crimea with President Putin there.

"We've already seen that the president has begun to make concessions to Putin".

Trump and Putin met first during the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany last July and again at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation in Danang, Vietnam in November. "First, we need to resolve those disputes and irritants that we have in our bilateral relations".

The American-Russian summit 16 July is expected to touch on these U.S. efforts and how Russia could help in persuading the Palestinian Authority to reengage the diplomatic efforts of the USA government.

"I'll talk to him about everything", Trump said on Air Force One on Friday.

The summit would offer Putin a chance to try to persuade Washington to lift some of the sanctions imposed on Russian Federation over its annexation of Crimea, and supposed meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

While the senior administration official said the summit must focus on carrying out a "sober assessment of the root causes" of problems in the US-Russia, the official also called the summit "a deliverable in itself".

It's not particularly unusual for presidents to sit down solo with other leaders before more formal diplomatic talks involving their delegations.

There are fears that the President will be so keen to impress Putin that he will be even more confrontational than expected at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels a few days before he goes to Helsinki.
