  • Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said the country will not back down on retaliatory tariffs

Trudeau also spoke Friday with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto to keep him up-to-date on Canada's response to the US tariffs.

Canada and Mexico are grappling with U.S. tariffs while also attempting to renegotiate NAFTA, a major free trade agreement with the U.S. In a variety of published reports, Trump said Sunday he plans to wait until after the mid-term elections to move forward with a new NAFTA deal.

Canada and Mexico have the additional challenge of responding to US tariffs while they attempt to renegotiate NAFTA, a major free trade agreement, with the United States.

Trump has slapped tariffs on billions of dollars worth of steel and aluminum imports from China, the European Union, Canada and others, prompting retaliation against US products.

If Trump steps up his attacks on Canada's economy and imposes a 25 percent tariff on automobiles as threatened, it would lead to "carmageddon", Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association president Flavio Volpe told a Canadian House of Commons committee hearing on Tuesday.

Trump initially granted Canada, EU members and other nations exemptions on the metal tariffs - 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum. US yogurt will now be hit with a 10 percent duty. Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said Friday they had no other choice and will not escalate the dispute, but also will not back down.

Sanders said that the tactic has only hurt American workers.

"We've been very nice to Canada for many years and they've taken advantage of that, particularly advantage of our farmers", she said.

Trudeau later spoke with Lopez Obrador on Monday, wherein they discussed their mutual trade interests and their "shared priority of updating the North American Free Trade Agreement for the betterment of their peoples", said a readout of the conversation issued Monday.

It's no secret there's been tension between Canada and the U.S. recently.

"We're going to take down all our barriers, we're going to take down all our taxes, right".

Trudeau on Sunday spoke in Leamington, Ontario, where he thanked Canadians for standing united against President Donald Trump's sanctions. "Everybody said, 'Uh, can we get on to another subject?"'

The phone call between the two leaders was the first to be publicly disclosed since Trump blasted Trudeau as "very dishonest and weak" at the end of the Group of Seven leaders meeting in Canada earlier this month.
