At 5:42 a.m. ET, the spacecraft was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station situated in Florida; it was launched by one of the Falcon 9 series of rockets developed by the SpaceX Company. Cimon is programmed to relate to astronauts. Infused with artificial intelligence, the floating bot is reminiscent of HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey, but far less evil.

Ultimately, CIMON will monitor space station astronauts to help assess their emotional states and psychological "group effects", Biniok said.

"With CIMON, crew members can do more than just work through a schematic view of prescribed checklists and procedures; they can also engage with their assistant", Airbus said in its original announcement of the new AI companion.

The round head of a robot named Cimon (SIE-mon) is part of SpaceX's latest delivery to the International Space Station.

SpaceX employs the Falcon 9 rocket used for this mission, as well as uses the Dragon Cargo Capsule used to supply all the ISS.

For the first time, a robot with true artificial intelligence is about to invade space.

To get Cimon's attention, Gerst will need only to call its name. The language of communication with the robot will be English.

It is also equipped with microphones and cameras to facilitate its collaboration with people, especially with the new German astronaut Alexander Gherst, with whom he will have the most ...

CIMON was trained with astronaut lingo and instructional data to walk Gerst through dozens of steps related to his research project either by showing him videos, talking him through the process, or recommending tools. For example, if an astronaut says 'I miss my family, ' the robot will respond with a more compassionate tone and offer to help. The study seeks to support development of countermeasures to protect astronaut health during missions, as well as to improve the treatment of immune, metabolic and sleep disorders on Earth. The Dragon sent cargo to space in 2016 and the Falcon blasted off a NASA satellite two months ago. Dragon separated from Falcon 9s second stage about nine minutes and thirty seconds after liftoff and is on its way to the International Space Station, now expected to arrive early on the morning of July 2nd.
