Anthony said the kind of "extreme fire activity" exhibited in the Pawnee and County fires is becoming commonplace not only in the greater Bay Area region, but across California.

"Usually with a fire we can chase it. we haven't been able to chase this because it keeps going in at least three different directions", Greer said. It's burning largely out of control at just five percent containment. Read on for more details.

The haze settling on areas to the south and west and rattled nerves near wine country communities that were devastated by deadly wildfires late a year ago. "The fires seem to be getting larger and more damaging across the landscape".

Here's a look at more images from the San Francisco Bay area. Cal Fire crews are setting fires to stop the fire.

No historic sites or cultural landmarks are now threatened by the fire.

On Tuesday morning, CAL FIRE said flames had devoured 70,000 acres of tinder-dry grass, brush and oak, and is 5% contained. According to InciWeb, burn-out operations were successful and "The following National Forest System Trails have been temporarily closed:Sierra National Forest Trails No. 26E01 (Mammoth Trail) to the Inyo NF Boundary, 26E14, 26E56, and 26E46 from the Inyo NF boundary". Additional road closures include CO 69 and CO 12. The fire is putting up a bunch of smoke over the Basalt area.

Many areas are under mandatory evacuation orders. The fire is about 80 per cent contained but flared up in the last week, prompting authorities to advise some residents to prepare to evacuate. But they cautioned that conditions remain risky and said they want to be sure that information is correct before notifying property owners. It started on July 1.

No injuries were reported and the exact number of people evacuated was unclear.

The west end of the 72,500-acre fire spent Monday afternoon creeping down to the east shore of Lake Berryessa. Indeed, as the fire flares, everyone has left, or never showed up, or is leaving.

The risk of new fires throughout the drought-stricken Western US remains high amid the expected use of fireworks by revelers over the July 4th holiday.

Travel is restricted on eastbound Highway 128 to Solano and Yolo counties.

The so-called County Fire erupted Sunday and at times has grown by 1,000 acres an hour. The fire was originally called the Guinda Fire and was later renamed the County Fire.

"It's a very challenging fire, I'll be honest with you, with all the wind changes", Shane Greer, an incident commander with the Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team, told residents Sunday.
