Canadian tariffs on more than 100 USA goods went into effect on Sunday, as a retaliatory effort against similar measures imposed by the United States.

Former Mexican Congressman Agustin Barrios Gomez joins Power & Politics to discuss what Mexico's president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador means for NAFTA negotiations.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Monday denounced President Donald Trump's handling of global trade disputes, issuing a report that argued tariffs imposed by Washington and retaliation by its partners would boomerang badly on the American economy.

Asked if he supported Canada's move to put tariffs on US imports as retaliation for the USA slapping tariffs on Canadian aluminum (10 per cent) and steel (25 per cent), Baruah said, "Absolutely".

He said Trudeau wanted to be on the ground with steelworkers at a family event on the day Canada's counter-tariffs came into effect to "make it really tangible what this is about".

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland was in Hamilton on Friday, re-affirming the governments promise to take action against the US.

In the interview on Fox News Channel's "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo", Trump again threatened to impose tariffs on imported cars, trucks and auto parts, saying, "The cars are the big ones". "We share common goals, strong people-to-people ties, and a mutually beneficial trading relationship that is the envy of the world - reflected in our joint effort to update the North American Free Trade Agreement for the 21st century", Trudeau said in a statement congratulating Lopez Obrador on his win.

"We've been very nice to Canada for many years and they've taken advantage of that, particularly advantage of our farmers", she said.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaks during a news conference in Ottawa, Ontario.

In recent months, Trump has frequently attacked Canadian trade barriers on agriculture - dairy products in particular - as unfairly hurting American farmers.

"I certainly understand and sympathize with the Canadian position of Prime Minister Trudeau that if you are going to be faced with a unilateral set of tariffs being imposed by the United States, its only natural that other nations respond".

Trudeau has insisted the US president's complaints about Canada's trade barriers are the result of his refusal to give in to Trump's demands to do away with the country's supply-management system, which is created to protect dairy, poultry and egg producers.

"I think we'll get through this".
