Germany crash out of World Cup

Son has been in action for South Korea at the World Cup in Russian Federation this summer, and helped his side pick up their only win of the competition with a 2-0 victory over Germany on Wednesday.

The German Football Association (DFB) has apologised to the nation the morning after Joachim Loew's side were sensationally knocked out of the World Cup with a 2-0 defeat to South Korea.

But South Korea would score twice in injury time, first through Kim Young-gwon and then Son Heung-min when Germany and Manuel Neuer pushed for a way back.

In the event, South Korea's late goals handed them a famous win and confirmed passage to the knockout stages for Mexico and Sweden, sending Germany crashing out.

And Loew, the 58-year-old who guided Germany to the world crown in Brazil four years ago, admitted he now needs time to decide whether his 12-year reign will continue - despite signing a new four-year contact in May.

"We had a lot of chances, even me I should have scored in the 87th (minute)", said a rueful Hummels.

The World Cup can throw up some weird and wonderful scenes, not least in Mexico City when locals hoisted the South Korean envoy onto their shoulders after his country's stunning win against Germany.

"We congratulate Sweden and Mexico on going through and South Korea on yesterday's win", the message continued.

Thomas Mueller, one of the heroes from the 2014 win, was rightly dropped from the starting 11 against South Korea but failed to make an impact as he came off the bench. The official had to check with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) before confirming the goal, but it was good. Those scores moved Sweden to the top of the group, Mexico qualified for the last 16 in second place, and Germany were left embarrassed, bottom of the pile.

The goal was awarded because Toni Kroos' touch had played him onside, and minutes later Germany were 2-0 down after Neuer ran up the pitch in a desperate attempt to get a goal.

"They are very important players, strategically and mentally", Son said. The Swedes won the group on Wednesday after beating Mexico 3-0, but the central Americans also went through. In Germany we had chances, but shot Goretzki handled by the goalkeeper, and Werner and Hummels from a killer position did not hit the target.

The South Koreans were hit with 16 fouls and four yellow cards, as they fought to find a way to do what many in the sporting world believed was impossible. Loew said he had not yet reflected on the future.
