  • WASHINGTON DC- JUNE 28 Protesters march from Freedom Plaza to demonstrate against family detentions and to demand the end of criminalizing efforts of asylum seekers and immigrants

Capitol Police arrested almost 600 people, who engaged in protests with several Democrat lawmakers.

Hundreds of women, wrapped in metallic silver blankets, referencing the duvets given to migrant children in detention centers, occupied the Senate office building in Washington DC after marching down the streets of the city chanting "Shame!"

Police say those who were arrested were processed on the scene and released.

The Associated Press reported that 575 protesters were eventually arrested after refusing to leave the building.

Demonstrators are planning a Saturday "Day of Action" with #FamiliesBelongTogether protests across the country. "Shame! Shame!" and "This is what democracy looks like". "It's powerful, intersectional and it is led by women". All 50 Senators keep an office in the building, and it houses the offices of three Senate committees.

More than 500 women including a member of Congress were arrested on Thursday (Jun 28) in the US Capitol complex protesting President Donald Trump's hardline immigration policy that has triggered thousands of family separations at the border with Mexico.

Jayapal later spoke out on her arrest, and called her detainment "courageous".

Congressmember Pramila Jayapal was arrested Thursday at a demonstration in Washington D.C., protesting the Trump administration's controversial immigration policies. President Donald Trump partially addressed the issue of family separation in an executive order signed June 20, but the problem is far from solved.
