However, Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency said Agung's danger status had not changed and flights were not in danger.

Jetstar has resumed flights to Bali on Friday after earlier cancellations due to Indonesia's Mount Agung volcano spewing water vapour and ash into the atmosphere. Although an exclusion zone around the carter has been marked at 4 km, planes need to avoid flying through volcanic ash as it might cause damage to aircraft engines, cooling systems, clog fuel and hamper visibility.

A volcanic ash cloud from Mount Agung has stopped flights in and out of the Indonesian island of Bali, disrupting the holiday plans of thousands.

A number of flights between Australia and Bali have been cancelled or turned back due to ash from the eruption of the island's Mount Agung.

But the budget airline says several flights will remain as scheduled until further notice.

Passengers listen to information at Bali's worldwide airport as airlines canceled flights.

Two small airports, at Banyuwangi and Jember in eastern Java, also closed because of the ash threat.

Bali's main worldwide gateway will be closed until at least Friday evening, according to officials, who added that two other domestic airports were also shut.

The volcano's alert level remains moderate.

The budget airline said in a statement that the Ngurah Rai International Airport was closed today, from 3am to 7pm.

The 3031-metre high volcano's last deadly eruptions occurred in 1963 and 1964, during which about 1200 people were killed.

Tens of thousands of locals fled to evacuation centres after last year's eruption.

Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for seismic upheavals and volcanic eruptions. Authorities are still scrutinising the situation and have not raised the alert level yet.

Local government seismologists monitor more than 120 active volcanoes.
