  • US Supreme Court Approves Trump's Travel Ban

US President Donald Trump has said the search for a replacement for retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy will "begin immediately". Although conservative, he sometimes joined the liberal wing of the court and authored landmark opinions on cases dealing with abortion, campaign finance and LGBT rights, including same-sex marriage.

President Trump said that he found out about Kennedy's retirement a half-hour before it was announced - he had in fact gone to the White House to talk to the president for about 30 minutes, and Kennedy offered recommendations about who might replace him, the president told reporters during a meeting with the president of Portugal.

"Justice Kennedy's retirement makes the issue of Senate control one of the most important issues of our time, the most important thing we can do", Trump declared, warning his supporters that Democrats would pick judges that would "destroy your freedoms".

"He said, too, that admiration for his colleagues on the Court means that he will retain warm ties with each of them in the years to come", the court's statement said. Both conservative and liberal interest groups are poised to press the fight.

Those victories, coupled with Kennedy's retirement, could embolden the administration's lawyers, who are facing legal challenges on multiple fronts, including over Trump's move to separate families who enter the United States illegally and his plan to rescind protections for "Dreamers", young adults brought to he country illegally as children.

In an opinion this year by Kennedy in a case involving a Colorado bakery, the court on a 7-2 vote ruled narrowly on the issue, but it punted on the larger question of whether to allow religious-based exemptions to anti-discrimination laws. Supreme Court after three decades on the panel.

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., a conservative George W. Bush appointee, could become the center of the court, Blackman said. "I'd like to have it announced right away so we can get to work on it", Grassley said.

Trump's selection of Justice Neil Gorsuch, a former law clerk for Kennedy who took over the seat occupied by the late Justice Antonin Scalia, has already had an effect on US policy. Planned Parenthood Federation of America, a nationwide abortion provider, said it was bracing for Trump to appoint a justice to overturn Roe v. Wade. Kirsten Gillibrand of NY wrote Tuesday on Twitter.

In 2017, Trump nominated and won confirmation of former Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Neil Gorsuch, a conservative jurist who replaced Scalia and played a key role in several important decisions this term, including those upholding Trump's travel ban on immigrants from several countries, most of which are majority Muslim, on national security grounds, and finding that public employees can not be forced to pay agency dues to unions they do not belong to but bargain collectively on their behalf. "I think we can do it". "And hopefully we're going to pick somebody who will be as outstanding".

Trump says in the Oval Office that he hasn't "really thought about that".

"I expect the nominee to be like Justice Gorsuch, to demonstrate excellence in every respect, and to earn widespread support from the American people, and bipartisan support for confirmation in the Senate", Leo said.
