Serena Williams wants Wimbledon to change seeding rules for returning moms

The change comes after criticism of French Open officials for how they handled the case of former world number one Serena Williams in her Grand Slam return last month after giving birth to a daughter last September.

The former world number one made her comeback in March after giving birth past year and is 183 in the rankings.

Speaking to ITV News, author of Eat Sweat Play Anna Kessel said that sport can be a "hostile place for mothers".

"Unfortunately, in the '90s they changed the rule whereas if you were injured [and] then you come back, you lose your seeding", she explained last week inside New York City's Tictail Market.

Williams - arguably the greatest female tennis player of all time - only recently returned following more than a year out of action meaning that she is likely to enter the competition unseeded. "Maybe not in time for me, but for the next person", Williams said, as per ABC.

"I just don't think it's right to think that way".

The 29-year-old reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in 2011 and 2016 but may struggle to do so this year if Williams nabs her spot. I don't think there would be one player that would complain, especially the top ones, if she was one of the top eight'. Her defeat in Paris, against Halep, was hard but not unexpected despite her having played great tennis in the first set.

"I think she is competitive, her level and fitness is back".

It's well worth noting that McEnroe was fairly measured in his appraisal of where Serena Williams should land with a preferential seeding, saying, "Somewhere between one and 10 - one and 16 at the worst". "So I think it's important to have those rules" reviewed.

Caroline Wozniacki believes the Wimbledon seeding committee will award Serena Williams a seeding on Wednesday. That's me coming from a different viewpoint'.

How's Serena Williams' return going so far?

This means that expecting mothers who take a break from the tennis world for their pregnancy won't slide way down in rank just because of a break from the game.
