  • Lewis Hamilton Sebastian Vettel

This is a great day. "It's really, really great to have this result". I haven't seen it yet so I will look at it again, but from the inside it didn't feel or didn't appear that there was a lot I could have done differently.

"My guys, I have been with them for six years they are pushing the boundaries and never giving up so I want to thank them and everyone at the factory".

Red Bull's Max Verstappen qualified fourth with Australian team mate Daniel Ricciardo fifth and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen sixth.

Hamilton won from pole after a race that had been in his hands from the moment he avoided contact on the first lap at turn one that cost his team-mate Valtteri Bottas, who was seventh, and Vettel.

Sebastian Vettel managed to finish fifth after a collision at the first corner saw him damage his vehicle and incur a five-second time penalty. He finished the race in Canada fifth, and saw Vettel turn a 14-point deficit into a one-point lead with a victory.

"It was my mistake", conceded Vettel.

"I'm too old for this stuff", he said with a smile, adding that with hindsight he would have been better off making a slower start and then fighting back.

"I'm disappointed because we had a chance to get a one-two finish".

Bottas, less effective in his efforts to recover in a vehicle that suffered floor and other damage, was down in 10th.

Sunday's race will be the first French Grand Prix since Magny-Cours in 2008 and the first held at the southern Le Castellet circuit since 1990.

Speaking later to Sky Sports about the comments, he said: "I think they shouldn't do it at all".

On seeing a video recording of the incident, he said: "He took him right out - ah, man, that's insane".

"Why Vettel gets only five seconds for this enormous mistake I don't understand", said the three-time world champion. Vettel was investigated for causing a collision and given a five-second time penalty by the stewards. "He destroyed the whole race for himself and for Bottas".

Behind the top three teams, Sainz took seventh for Renault, Leclerc did well to take eighth for Sauber, Magnussen's Haas starts in ninth and Grosjean get tenth after bending his auto.

The Briton has now gone a record 33 successive races in the points.

After the race Mercedes non-executive chairman Niki Lauda suggested Vettel should have been punished more severely, but Verstappen's thoughts on the incident centred around the events of his own season so far.

"I tried to follow Lewis, but obviously he was controlling the pace".

"Obviously for Valtteri it was very bad because it affected his race and he had nothing to do with it, so I went to him after the race". "But I always strive for perfection and there was some time left on the track, so I still have stuff to work on".
