  • Egypt's Mohamed Salah

Sadio Mane said Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah has the mental strength to bounce back from injury and World Cup heartache, revealing Saturday that he sent him a message of support.

"Salah was granted honorary Chechen citizenship by Kadyrov at a banquet held to say goodbye to the squad on Friday night".

Salah was reported to be unhappy after being photographed with Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.

Kadyrov has been in charge of Chechnya since 2007 but has been accused of human rights violations, per Sky Sports News. "I gave Mohamed Salah a copy of the order and a pin at a celebratory dinner that I gave in honour of the Egyptian team".

Kadyrov, leader of Chechnya since 2004, is a controversial figure on the global stage because of his hard-line rule over his people and a series of contentious comments, particularly against the gay community. A source with knowledge of Salah's position on the matter confirmed this stance to ESPN FC, adding that the player is now considering his future with his national team.

In contrast to the reports, Egyptian FA board member Essam Abdel Fattah claims there is no truth to suggestions Salah is close to quitting. Given the vocal Tweets from his agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, it's at the very least clear that all is not well in the Salah camp. He is eating and laughing with his teammates.

His World Cup experience has been traumatic on two fronts, though.

Prior to the tournament, a row over sponsorship and image rights involving the national team's plane threatened to cause turmoil between the Egyptian FA and their on-field talisman.

The forward is Egypt's star player although he missed their opening World Cup game against Uruguay due to a shoulder problem picked up against Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Salah has played 58 times for Egypt since his debut in September 2011 and has scored 34 times, putting him fourth in their all-time top scorer list.
