After their last-gasp 2-1 victory against Tunisia on Monday, Gareth Southgate's side were looking to make it two wins from two.

Most importantly of all, in Kane they have a striker the whole world will now fear.

Their previous best was four, which they did on two occasions - a 4-4 draw in the group stages against Belgium in 1954, and the 4-2 win after extra time against Germany in the 1966 final at home.

Only one English player - Lineker with 10 - now has more World Cup goals than Kane, who has swiftly moved to five goals.

He even managed to douse the flames of the first media storm of England's World Cup on the eve of the Panama match - over whether journalists should reveal his team selections by recognising the press should not be cheerleaders. The way we played, the discipline, the hard work.

Southgate and his backroom staff also deserve credit for a series of innovative set-piece routines that have already reaped four goals.

A penalty from Harry Kane doubled England's lead, before Jesse Lingard got in on the act with a curling strike from outside the box.

"Fantastic to be through and to do it this way is brilliant".

Substitute Felipe Baloy got a consolation goal for Panama on 78 minutes and Southgate noted how the concession could hold significance when it comes to top spot in the group.

England and Belgium are level on points, goals scored and goals conceded, with the Three Lions top of the group by virtue of having picked up fewer bookings than the Red Devils.

Kane now tops the scoring charts at the World Cup, one ahead of Manchester United's Romelu Lukaku and Real Madrid's Ronaldo following the latter's hattrick against Spain and single strike against Morocco.

With Kane still only 24, the 6ft 2inch striker can get even better and boasts all the ingredients needed to go on and become the world's best striker and a potential Balon d'Or victor. The goal was an example of Kane's precision and clinical acumen.

"Obviously it's been going well so far".

With luck like that, England really can dare to dream.
