Djokovic eases into Queen's Club semi-finals

And so he reaches 800 wins, and will be the favourite to make it 801 in the semi-finals, where he will play another Frenchman, Jeremy Chardy, ranked 61, who beat Frances Tiafoe, 6-4 6-4, in under and hour and a half.

Djokovic, playing in his first final on the tour in nearly a year, had a huge chance to finish the match when he had a match point at 5-4 but he could not convert.

Djokovic is competing at the ATP World Tour 500 series event for the first time since 2010 having reached the final back in 2008 when he lost to Rafael Nadal.

"It was a tough match but I have waited six years to get my hands on this trophy". I said 50! So it's 19 years (left in his career). "I definitely feel relieved that I won it and what a great week".

"I think Roger's motivational level is just slightly better and higher on Grand Slams, " said Cilic, "and you can see that throughout so many years that he's been showing the best tennis at Grand Slam levels".

The 12-time Grand Slam champion's last final - and title - also came on a British grass court, when he defeated Gael Monfils in Eastbourne last July.

Marin Cilic has gone from Queen's Club runner-up 12 months ago to being the 2018 champion.

And then, with Cilic serving to send it to a tiebreak, Djokovic raised his returning game and broke, with the Croatian dumping a forehand into the net.

A high-level semi-final full of thundering serves boiled down to two tiebreaks in which the ice-cool Cilic proved the more composed player to set up a Sunday showdown with former world number one Novak Djokovic. "I'm just grateful I'm able to do something that I really love and can be successful in".

His zest for the game certainly seems to have been revitalized and he has been showcasing some seriously impressive form on the immaculate grass courts of Queen's club by strolling to victory in his first two matches, most notably with an emphatic straight-sets destruction of World Number 5 Grigor Dimitrov. Obviously didn't get off to the start I wanted to.

But crucially, Cilic saved a match point at 4-5 in the second set, with a thunderous service victor setting the stage for a thrilling tie-break.

However, Djokovic repelled five break points, showing the sort of defensive prowess he used to offer up in his pomp.
