Senegal registers Africa's first win in 2-1 defeat of Poland

Senegal's 2-1 victory over Poland came in the day's second Group H game, following Japan's historic 2-1 win over Colombia.

Japan's Gen Shoji gets above Colombia's Radamel Falcao to win a header during the group H match between Colombia and Japan at the 2018 soccer World Cup in the Mordavia Arena in Saransk, Russia, Tuesday, June 19, 2018.

After a goalless first half at the Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg, Ahmed Fathi diverted Roman Zobnin's shot into his own net to give Russian Federation the lead. Things are not looking so good for the other African nations at the tournament.

"At least Salah scored", fans consoled themselves on social media, fumbling for a better explanation for the debacle.

It is football, stupid!

Japan's hopes of winning their opening World Cup fixture on Tuesday have been written off before a ball has been kicked - by a chirpy parrot believed to possess psychic powers.

Images from the aftermath of the Japan-Colombia match showed Japanese fans, some armed with plastic bin bags they had brought along with them, similarly clearing their portion of the stadium.

"What matters is that we still have two games that we will play as if they were finals", Garcia said. Then Senegal got past eighth-ranked Poland.

The ball went in after a deflection off Thiago Cionek in the 37th minute.

Juan Quintero restored parity for Colombia in the 39th minute, with Yuya Osako making it 2-1 for Japan in the 73rd minute.

"In addition to their heightened consciousness of the need to be clean and to recycle, cleaning up at events like the World Cup is a way Japanese fans demonstrate pride in their way of life and share it with the rest of us", explains Prof North. "We won thanks to discipline. Today we finally accompany our team COLOMBIA!"

"We lost a match, but now we have to win the next and keep dreaming".

Cissé, who captained the Senegalese side that created wonders at the 2002 World Cup, knows the importance of discipline in tournaments such as the World Cup.

It was sweet revenge for Japan, who were thumped 4-1 by Colombia in Brazil four years ago, but they wasted plenty of chances to kill the game off.
