New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was admitted to hospital in Auckland for the birth of her first child on Thursday, according to a statement from her office.

Ardern went to hospital early on Thursday, announcing she was handing over the top job to Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters.

The 37-year-old is only the second elected leader to give birth while in office in modern times.

Ardern posted a photograph of herself, her partner Clarke Gayford and her daughter on Instagram on Thursday, welcoming her new child: "Welcome to our village wee one". The girl arrived at 4:45 p.m. weighing 3.3 kilograms (7.3 pounds). "We're all doing really well", she wrote.

The couple had been told they would need help to conceive, so she was surprised to learn she was pregnant just six days before she was confirmed as Prime Minister.

"Only later did I learn that I was the only head of government in recorded history actually to give birth while in office. We already talk about significant issues, that will just continue, we'll just be in different roles", she said in an interview with Fairfax media just before going on maternity leave.

The Labour Party leader won plaudits in last year's election campaign for dismissing questions about whether she meant to become a mother, saying it was unacceptable that women should have to answer such a question in the workplace. Ardern plans to take six weeks of leave before returning to work.

"Thank you so much for your best wishes and your kindness", she said.

She said that after the birth, she hoped to have some quiet time to enjoy as a family. "Plenty of women have multitasked before me, and I want to acknowledge that", she said when revealing the pregnancy in January.

Ardern became the leader of New Zealand's Labour Party in September and was elected prime minister a few weeks later.

"As a mum, my heart is bursting with pride and love for the prime minister and her whānau and wish them the very best for their future".
