Trump to sign decree to end migrant family separations

Trump's directive to federal agencies was "work together to keep illegal immigrant families together during the immigration process and to reunite these previously separated groups".

"Under this bill, when people are being prosecuted for illegally crossing the border, families will remain together under DHS custody through the length of their proceedings", Ryan said, noting the bill includes funding that the Homeland Security Department can use to provide housing for these families.

One of the people familiar with Nielsen's thinking said she believes there is no certainty that Congress will act to fix the separation issue.

New York City's mayor says he was surprised to learn a children's center in Harlem is caring for 239 migrant children separated from their parents by federal immigration officials.

House Speaker Paul Ryan says the House will vote on the immigration bill Wednesday but offered no back-up plan if the measure fails.

Trump has made immigration a signature issue of his administration, and he blames Democrats for the situation at the border.

The Democratic mayor said he didn't know until that morning that such large numbers of children taken from their parents were being brought to NY. But the programs are hard to navigate, immigrant advocates told CNN, and parents in immigration officials' custody or jail can't get phone calls. Nielsen is on her way to the White House to discuss the order with the president and his team.

The effort would mark a dramatic turnaround for an administration that has been insisting, wrongly, that it has no choice but to separate families apprehended at the border because of the law and a court decision. One official said it was the Justice Department that generated the legal strategy that is codified in the executive order, and disputed the notion that Homeland Security was involved in drawing up the document. They want open borders, which breeds terrible crime.

Mrs. Bush from a safe retirement perch was more direct: "I appreciate the need to enforce and protect our global borders, but this zero-tolerance policy (on undocumented entry by children) is cruel".

Under Trump's administration, the policy of separating families in order to detain adults has struck a nerve and generated an unprecedented political outcry.

"Tomorrow the House will vote on legislation to keep families together".

President Donald Trump's administration separated nearly 2,000 immigrant children from their parents at the border over the span of six weeks from mid-April through May. "Republicans want security. But I am working on something - it never ends!" "There will not be a grandfathering of existing cases", Health and Human Services Department spokesperson Kenneth Wolfe said.

The legislation, which was backed by Trump, would have also allowed recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program to apply for legal status. Some families who wanted a free ride in the United States have been legitimate asylum seekers, but some have not been.

"As I said last week, we do not want children taken away from their parents".

After children are released to a parent or relative, guardians must make sure the kids attend immigration court hearings and check in regularly with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
