Luis Suárez opened the scoring from close range after 23 minutes.

The South Americans take on the hosts in their final Group A match on Jun 25 with top spot on the line, while Egypt and Saudi Arabia have been eliminated after both suffered back-to-back defeats.

With Juan Antonio Pizzi's men unable to create a clear chance, Saudi Arabia are without a win in 12 World Cup matches and in danger of finishing bottom of their group, as they have in all three previous appearances.

Facing elimination, the Saudis fought hard for a goal with Hatan Bahmi getting several early chances.

Bizarrely, two-time World Cup champion Uruguay has never beaten the Green Falcons; Saudi Arabia won a friendly in 2002 while a 2014 friendly ended in a draw.

The result meant Uruguay and Russian Federation ensured progression from Group A after winning their first two games, while the Saudis and Egypt are out of contention following two losses apiece.

A Luis Suarez goal in the first half off a corner kick proved to be difference, but it was a proud and positive performance from the Saudi Arabians, who gave Uruguay more trouble than expected.

Uruguay snuck by the Egyptians via a late set-piece goal in their opening match of the tournament and went back to the well for their first against the Asian side after 23 minutes.

Saudi Arabia had lots of the ball but didn't press forward enough to hurt Uruguay and it was a fairly comfortable victory in the end.

In truth, it was another stuttering display from Oscar Tabarez's Uruguay team.

"All we wanted to do was to win and qualify for the next round".

Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani started alongside Suarez as the pair look to add to their combined tally of 93 global goals.
