Diego Costa's third goal in two matches at the World Cup has lifted Spain to a 1-0 win over a stubborn Iran side Wednesday.

The Carlos Queiroz's men will be hoping to beat the La Rojo so as to top the group after beating Morocco 1-0 on Friday.

Carlos Queiroz's side produced a defensive masterclass to reduce Spain to nothing more than half-chances during a hugely frustrating opening 53 minutes for the 2010 champions.

Iran was later denied an equaliser by the video assistant referee as the got a word in his ear that "goal-scorer" Saeid Ezatolahi was in fact offside.

Iran could have scored in the 80th minute but Mehdi Taremi's header went over the bar.

The game against Iran will be interesting as Spain need to win this match if they want to keep their World Cup journey alive and a draw will be a troublesome result.

By the end of a pulsating opening half in which Iran's defence thwarted the few real chances La Roja were able to create, Hierro's men left the pitch looking rather red-faced.

Spain: De Gea; Nacho, Pique, Ramos, Alba; Busquets, Iniesta, Silva; Vazquez, Costa, Isco.

After an exhilarating first six days, the seventh day of the World Cup will see some of the biggest players in action.

Spain finally broke through when Diego Costa scored without much knowledge of the situation as Ramin Rezaeian deflected his clearance off the Atletico Madrid star.

Costa has now scored nine goals in his last nine global starts for Spain. Both the team look to have arrived in their best form for tonight. The Iranians were awarded a freekick which they fail to goal in on!

With qualification for the knockout phase yet to be sealed, Spain will be reliant on Silva, as well as his midfield colleagues, to clinch their round two berth with a victory against Morocco.

David Silva also showed moments of class in the game against Portugal, seemingly never losing possession and keeping Spain's passing game going in midfield.

The FIFA World Cup 2018 Iran vs Spain match will take place on Wednesday, June 20, 2018.

It promises to be an interesting game as Iran and Spain meet for the first ever time.
