Hornets trading Howard to Nets

The Charlotte Hornets chose to end the Dwight Howard era after one season on Wednesday morning, flipping the well-traveled big man to Brooklyn in exchange for Timofey Mozgov, a pair of second round draft picks, and some cash. Shortly after, Yahoo Sports' Shams Charania confirmed the deal and the pieces being flipped.

An eight-time All-Star and former No. 1 overall pick is about to join his fourth team in three years.

But now, thanks, surprisingly to a trade for Dwight Howard, the Nets nightmare might finally be over.

Mozgov, first through his agent and later on a personal entry on Scorum, expressed his unhappiness with how his playing time vanished last season.

Howard's most impressive game of the 2017-18 season came on March 21 (ironically enough, vs. Brooklyn), when he finished with 32 points and a career-high 30 rebounds in a comeback win against the Nets.

Mozgov has two years left on his contract at $16 million per season.

Mozgov, 31, averaged 4.2 points per game and 3.2 rebounds in 31 games for the Nets last season. While adding Walker could potentially aid the Cavs in re-signing James, Cleveland possesses assets - the No. 8 pick in Thursday's draft and expiring contracts - which could help the Hornets tear their roster down while simultaneously infusing it with youth.

If that's the case, the Nets could simply waive him, eat the $23.8 million cap hit and free up the two max slots for 2019-20. Mozgov signed a four-year deal worth $64 million. However, the trade itself can not be completed until the moratorium ends on July 6, and Brooklyn will need money to expire off the salary cap to take on Howard's salary.
